It is with great sadness that we have to inform you of the passing of our friend and colleague Per Johander.

Per was one of the original partners in the 4M Network of Excellence (NoE) and was joint leader of the Ceramics Processing Division. Always full of energy and ideas he was instrumental in the success of the ceramics group, their work culminating in the publication of a handbook on Ceramics Processing in Microtechnology. When the 4M NoE came to an end, Per was a great supporter of the idea of setting up the 4M Association and made sure that Swerea IVF was one of the first to join.

4M2020 CSA Proposal

As it was decided at the 4M Association meeting in Vienna, the 4M2020 CSA proposal was submitted on 4th December 2012. The summary for the 4M2020 CSA Proposal is now available to view here.

New 4M Association Contract

4Mlogo The contracts with Cardiff and C-Tech Innovation have now been signed and thus we have implemented the proposed and agreed way forward for the Association in Vienna during the 4M2012 Conference. From 1st November 2012, the 4M Office will be hosted by C-Tech and an outline description of the services that C-Tech will be providing to the 4M Association are available here.

University of Birmingham Job Vacancy: Research Associate/ Research Fellow in Laser Processing/Machining

New Manufacturing Method Could Reduce Semiconductor Costs

A new method of manufacturing small structures in electronics could lead to less expensive semiconductors, according to Lund University in Sweden. The Lund researchers are working on their innovative method for manufacturing nanowires on semiconductor wafers, known as epitaxy.

Samsung to Launch First Flexible Screen Devices in 2013

Samsung

Samsung is ready to showcase its innovation capability by launching its YOUM flexible screens next year, according to the BBC, Samsung is ready to ship the first devices to the market in the first half of 2013. Samsung wants to take the lead with flexible screens and will use their own OLED technology.

The latest results of the European Project Polybright (Extending the process limits of laser polymer welding with high-brilliance beam sources) are now available on their website. The results concern the correlation between crystallinity degree and spatial seam homogeneity for laser overlap welding of polymers applying the TWIST® method.

How Butterfly Wings Can Inspire New High-Tech Surfaces

A South American butterfly flapped its wings, and caused a flurry of nanotechnology research to happen in Ohio. Researchers have taken a new look at butterfly wings and rice leaves, and learned things about their microscopic texture that could improve a variety of products. Researchers were able to clean up to 85 percent of dust off a coated plastic surface that mimicked the texture of a butterfly wing.

A Wide Variety of Nanostructures on Glass Surfaces

The SCHOTT technology group has developed a nanostructuring technique for surfaces that already ranks among the important emerging technologies: so-called nanoimprint lithography. This technological platform should provide the basis for a wide range of innovative applications including decorative stainless steel appearances for glass, OLED applications and even photonic crystals.
