Microsystems-based products are a key value-adding element for many sectors of industry - and the predicted nanotechnology future will also be largely delivered by microtechnologies. While the late 20th century has seen a silicon-based microelectronics revolution, the 21st century looks forward to the adoption of micro- and nano-manufacturing technologies as the demand for function and length scale integrations increases continuously on the way to bridging the nano- and the macro-worlds.
The existing imbalance between the ease with which batch-fabricated microcomponents and microsystems can be produced in silicon compared to the difficulties and costs associated with their manufacture in other materials hinders the introduction of new microsystems-based products into the market. Although there may be commercial advantages to leveraging the present suite of IC-based processes and materials, they will not be able to meet the demands of emerging products for 3D and high aspect ratio structures, enhanced-force microactuation, improved environmental resistance, high precision, and unification and standardisation. To broaden the range of microsystems-based products and simultaneously multiply their capabilities requires the integration of new materials and precision engineering technologies for their processing with IC-based, batch-fabrication processes. These are major challenges in developing new products that at the same time represent promising research and development areas for innovation and value creation.

Eric Baer is the Leonard Case Jr. Professor in the Dept. of Macromolecular Science and Engineering and Director of the Center for Layered Polymeric Systems (CliPS) NSF Science and Technology Center at Case Western Reserve University.
His honors include the Curtis W. McGraw Research Award, American Society of Engineering Education, 1968; Centennial Scholar, The Johns Hopkins University, 1976; Annual Award of the Thermoplastic Materials and Foams Division, Society of Plastics Engineers, 1979; Distinguished Alumnus Award, The Johns Hopkins University, 1979; International Award of the Society of Plastics Engineers, 1980; Borden Award in the Chemistry of Plastics and Coatings, American Chemical Society, 1981; Meritorious Service Award of the Case Alumni Association, 1982; International Education Award of the Society of Plastics Engineers, 1991; Doctor of Sciences "honoris causa" of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Chemistry) June 28, 1993; Paul J. Flory Education Award, American Chemical Society, March 27, 1996; Frank and Dorothy Humel Hovorka Prize, Case Western Reserve University, 1998; Roon Foundation Award, Federation of Societies for Coatings Technology and Coatings Industry Education Fund, 1999.
He was inducted into The Plastics Hall of Fame, June 22, 2000.
Research interests: Irreversible microdeformation mechanisms; pressure effects on morphology and mechanical properties; relationships between hierarchical structure and mechanical function; mechanical properties of soft connective tissue; polymer composites and blends; polymerization crystallization on crystalline surfaces; viscoelastic properties of polymer melts; damage and fracture analysis of polymers, and micro- and nanolayered composites. Eric Baer is Editor-In-Chief of the Journal of Applied Polymer Science. He has edited five books and published over 550 research papers.
Professor Phil Coates BSc ARCS MSc PhD FREng FIMechE FIMMM CEng
Phil is a Physics graduate (Imperial College), London; his PhD research was on solid phase deformation processing of polymers (Leeds University).
Phil Coates is Pro Vice Chancellor for Research & Knowledge Transfer, and Professor of Polymer Engineering at the University of Bradford, UK. He is Director of the internationally recognised Interdisciplinary Research Centre (IRC) in Polymer Science and Technology, with some 50 researchers at Bradford involved at the leading edge of in-process measurements for process monitoring, analysis and control, and computer modelling. He is also Director of the Polymer Centre of Industrial Collaboration, and the International Centre for Micro & Nano Moulding. The research targets high value polymer products for a range of sectors – optical, healthcare technology (e.g. bioresorbable polymers for orthopaedic applications) pharmaceuticals processing, automotive and advanced materials developments, including nanocomposites and reactive grafting. His research has substantial support (over £24 million total grants and contracts) from UK Government sources and industry, with over 100 companies collaborating in the research programmes from the USA, Europe, the Middle East, Australia and Japan. Similary, the research involves strong international cooperation in the UK, Europe, N America, Japan and China. He leads the new Science Bridges China project – a government sponsored collaboration (currently around £3.4m total UK and China support) with 11 Chinese Universities focussed on innovation in healthcare technologies, based around an open innovation platform.
Prof Coates is a director of Medilink (Y&H) Ltd and until recently was a director of Cogent SSC Ltd. He is a member of the Yorkshire Universities Executive Management Group, and chairs the Leeds City Region (LCR) Innovation Task Group, and is a member of the LCR Economic Drivers and Innovation Panel. He was honoured by the award of the Institute of Materials (IOM3) Netlon Gold Medal for Innovation in Polymer Processing (2000), the Plastics Industry Award for personal contribution to the industry in 2006, and the IOM3 Swinburne Award (2008).
He has published extensively - some 280 papers, in scientific journals and has co-authored 4 books, and edited 10 books. He is Chief Editor of the IoM3 international journal, Plastics, Rubber and Composites: Macromolecular Engineering. Prof Coates was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 1995. He is married, with four children and two grandchildren; in addition to family, his chief interests are in music, and computers.

Herman Schoo is the Program manager in the Holst Centre of the strategic program “Sensor Tags & Systems” where combinations of organic, large area electronic device technology is investigated.
He was recently appointed as Senior Research Fellow of TNO.

1992-1999: From february 1992 involved as a polymer chemist in several multidisciplinary projects at the Philips Research Laboratories. These included the development of polycarbonates that do not show stress-induced birefringence, the synthesis of (block) copolymers that can be used in the steric stabilization of water-based colloidal suspensions of (for instance) metal oxides, and the development of (semi-)conducting polymers. Developed PPV materials that were later commercialized by Covion (now Merck). Was involved in setup of PolyLED Business Unit at Philips, resulting in a pilot production unit in Heerlen, being the first commercial producer of polymer light emitting diodes.
1999-2005: From February 1999 at TNO Industrial Technology and as research fellow of the Dutch Polymer Institute to set up a group, working on semi-conducting polymers and devices. This encompassed Organic LEDs, Transistors, Solar Cells and Sensors based on organic devices, involving around 20 researchers. Involved as Chief Technology Officer in a startup-company, “Orgatronics”, aiming at pre-production support and pilot production of organic electronic device applications. Member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Plastic Electronics Conference. Lecturer in a number of Top Technology Courses on polymer Electronics. Co-organizer of the International Conference on Organic Electronics. Involved in setup of the Holst Centre at the Eindhoven High Tech Campus. Currently, this is one of the leading institutes in the field of Organic and Large Area Device Technology

Dr. Alexander Stuck is currently head of CSEM BASEL. He is an expert in nano-optics and replication technologies. He has a track record of successful collaboration with industry leaders in brand protection and optical microsystems.
Before joining CSEM he was responsible for the development and production of DVD-recorders and managed a successful turnaround of a microtechnology company as CEO. He also worked as a project leader and industry consultant for larger technological companies.
Dr. Alexander Stuck has a successful academic track record in optics and nanotechnology and received the first research award by the Swiss Physical Society (SPG-Preis) in 1991, sponsored by IBM, for his work on nano-technology and holography.

Each participant will be allowed 15 minutes per presentation and at the end of the each session there will be 10 minutes question time. Session chairs will make sure the schedule is respected.
In order to avoid technical and connection problems and the corresponding loss of time, a laptop will be provided by the organisers. Presentations must be saved on memory stick or CD in PowerPoint format exclusively (version 2002 or earlier but no earlier than 97) and pass it on to the technician during conference registration. Please note that the papers must be presented by one of the authors and presentation cannot be amended after above date. If you need any special facilities for your oral presentation, please consult the organiser as soon as possible but no later than September 2010.
The language of the conference will be English and no translation facilities will be provided. Only one oral and/or one poster presentation will be accepted from each participant.
4M2010 reserves the right to cancel an oral presentation if the above requirements are not met.

Poster Presentation Presenters must be available to discuss their displays throughout the Conference. Presenters can display their poster on the first day and have it displayed for the first two days. Authors may bring extra copies of their work to be used for handouts. The room numbers will be available nearer the time.
The Poster Board/Panels for each presentation will be available, with approximate dimensions 90cm wide and 116cm high. Each poster board/panel is marked with a number on the upper left corner. Poster is recommended to be in A0 format, however the total space available for your poster is (app. W 90cm x H 116cm). The presenter must provide own tape etc to attach materials to the display board, along with any other supplies.
All posters must be in English with the paper title (2.5cm), author names and affiliations (1.5 cm) and the text easily readable. Poster should include introduction, development and conclusion with a contact point.
Drawings, diagrams and photos are extremely helpful and often necessary to display results and conclusions. Please do not overload any chart or drawing with information.
The Organising Committee reserves the right to cancel a presenter’s poster session if the above requirements are not met.
